Ankle sprain sidelines James in scrimmage

Associated Press

Nursing a mild right-ankle sprain, LeBron James shot baskets on the sideline but was held out of a U.S. Olympic team basketball scrimmage yesterday. "He's responding very well to treatment," team spokesman Craig Miller said during a closed practice at Valley High School near Las Vegas, where the Americans are preparing for the Olympics. "We're saying he's day to day."

James injured his ankle when he landed on Kevin Durant's foot in a scrimmage Tuesday.

False alarm. A feared gas leak forced hundreds from the massive Beijing building that will house broadcasting facilities for the Olympics.

Authorities later said that it was a false alarm, and that the odor had come from building materials. No injuries were reported.

Baseball. Colorado second baseman Jayson Nix was picked to round out the U.S. baseball team after the Rockies optioned him to triple-A Colorado Springs.

Outfielder Colby Rasmus, one of the St. Louis Cardinals' top prospects, will not play with Team USA because of a sprained left knee.

Noteworthy. Brazilian beach volleyball star Juliana said she expected to compete in the Olympics with her partner, Larissa, even though a knee injury during qualifying kept her off the sand for a month. . . . Eric Shanteau, who decided to put off surgery for testicular cancer until after the Olympics, has been cleared by doctors to head to Beijing with the U.S. swim team. . . . Michelle Kwan will join Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao as part of the seven-member presidential delegation to the closing ceremony in Beijing. . . . The U.S. women's field hockey team, which hadn't won in six games, held the world's top-ranked team, the Netherlands, to a 2-2 tie in an exhibition game in Indianapolis.
