McCain ad ties Obama to gas pain

KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine - Republican John McCain yesterday released an eyebrow-raising ad blaming Democrat Barack Obama for higher gas prices. In a TV ad on national cable and in 11 states including Pennsylvania, McCain pushed his support for offshore drilling, which Obama opposes, as the remedy for rising gas prices.
As the price readout on a lonely gas pump rolls over to $5, the announcer asks: "Who can you thank for rising prices at the pump?" Rising from the background is the sound of a crowd chanting: "Obama, Obama, Obama." A smiling Obama appears on the screen with a pump rising over his right shoulder.
This ad is the latest tit-for-tat commercial over energy in the presidential campaign. Earlier this month, an Obama ad accused McCain of being "part of the problem" of high gas prices. - AP
Corzine assures Israel on Obama New Jersey's Gov. Corzine met in Israel yesterday with top Israeli leaders and said he assured them that Democrat Barack Obama backs America's longtime commitment to Israeli security.
Corzine, on the second day of an official visit to the Jewish state, met with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, President Shimon Peres, and Benjamin Netanyahu, leader of the Likud party.
Amid Israeli concern about Iran developing a nuclear program, Corzine, who endorsed Hillary Rodham Clinton's campaign but now supports Obama, said he didn't hear "any rejection of the idea of Barack Obama being the next president."

Candidates agree to church forum LAKE FOREST, Calif. - John McCain and Barack Obama will participate Saturday, Aug. 16, in a question-and-answer forum at Saddleback Church, Pastor Rick Warren said yesterday.
Warren, who oversees the 22,000-member congregation, will question the candidates during the church's Saddleback Civil Forum on Leadership and Compassion.
The candidates are expected to appear together briefly before each takes questions from Warren for about an hour apiece. A coin toss determined that Obama will go first. - AP
