Outage snarls train service throughout Northeast
Jul 24, 2008
Thousands of evening commuters and rail travelers in the Northeast were delayed yesterday after a power outage snarled train service. Amtrak and NJ Transit said service was being restored about 5:45 p.m., but significant delays were expected after more than an hour without trains running. Five SEPTA Regional Rail lines suspended service because of Amtrak's power problems, SEPTA spokesman Gary Fairfax said: the R1 Airport, R5 Paoli, R6 Cynwyd, R7 Trenton, and R8 Chestnut Hill West.
Service from Boston to Philadelphia, including New York City, was affected by the power outage after severe thunderstorms passed through the region, Amtrak said. The outage also extended west to Harrisburg.
The National Weather Service said Southeastern Pennsylvania and South Jersey were under a severe thunderstorm watch through last evening and a flash-flood watch through this morning. Power outages were reported throughout the area last night, and high winds and hail were reported in Montgomery and Chester Counties. Half-inch hail was reported in Gloucester County, and Trenton had quarter-inch hail. - AP and Inquirer staff
