Latest heat wave kills two more city men

Two more men have died in Philadelphia as a result of the oppressive heat, bringing the number of deaths in this week's heat wave to four. Jeff Moran, a spokesman for the Philadelphia Department of Health, said yesterday that the body of an unidentified 55-year-old man was found Tuesday on the second floor of his residence in the Ogontz-Fern Rock section. The home had no air-conditioning, no fans and just one window was open. He was last seen alive last Thursday, Moran said. The cause of his death was given as excessive exposure to heat, as well as diabetes.
The body of a 56-year-old man was found Tuesday inside a home with no air-conditioning and only two small fans. That man, who lived in the Kensington-Port Richmond section, had died of excessive exposure to heat, as well as congestive heart failure.
The heat wave was the third and longest of the season, with temperatures reaching 90 or higher for seven straight days. So far this summer, 22 heat-related deaths have been reported in the city. Though the heat broke yesterday, Moran said, it is possible that additional heat-related deaths will be discovered in the coming days. - Allison Steele
