Sideshow: Ebert, Roeper: Show's over

Could the nationally syndicated movie review show At the Movies With Ebert & Roeper possibly be the same without Roger Ebert , who's leaving the show? Ebert, who cofounded the show with the late Gene Siskel , yesterday said he's bailing because Disney-ABC Domestic Television is taking the show "in a new direction" and he doesn't want to be associated with it. What if Chicago Sun-Times scribe Richard Roeper also left the show? In fact, he is. Roeper says he and Disney failed to reach a new contract settlement. It's a metaphysical conundrum: Would At the Movies With Ebert & Roeper still be At the Movies With Ebert & Roeper without Ebert and Roeper? Roeper, whose last show will air over the weekend of Aug. 16-17, said he will "proceed elsewhere . . . as the cohost of a movie review show that honors the standards established by Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert more than 30 years ago." (What will he call the show?) No comment from Disney.
Jessica shares of herself
Things got emotional at the Country Thunder USA country music festival in Wisconsin on Saturday night when Jessica Simpson , whose switch to country music has been an inspiration to us all, broke down in tears on stage during her set.
"This is my first time being on stage in three years," Jess said. "Coming out tonight makes me extremely emotional." She said being victimized at the hands of gossipers has made her life better. "I'm so happy I went through that because it makes life so much more beautiful."
The performer, whose love for Tony Romo seems to know no bounds, dedicated the song "You're My Sunday" to the football stud. "Tonight there's this guy here, he throws a football and he's really good at it," Jess said. "He's my better tomorrow and I wrote this song for him."
A relief for Mick Fleetwood Fleetwood Mac drummer Mick Fleetwood 's daughter Ruby , 6, was rushed to the hospital on Friday after nearly drowning in the pool at the family's L.A. home, report TMZ.com and USAToday.com.
She was listed in critical, but stable, condition yesterday at Cedars-Sinai Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
Ruby was doing cartwheels near the pool when she hit her head and fell into the water. USAToday.com say her doctors are confident she will make a full and total recovery.
Carey nurses his heart Motocross racer Carey Hart , whose new, cleverly named nightclub Wasted Space in the Hard Rock Hotel in Vegas opened this weekend, says his heart still belongs to his one-time wife (of like 4 minutes) pop songstress and Doylestown native, Pink .
It helps, Carey says, that the pair are trying to become friends. "We talk all the time and try to stay connected as much as possible," Carey tells People. But could a friendship ever be enough for Carey, who admits, "I miss everything about her"? Pink and Carey, who wed on Jan. 7, 2006, separated 25 months later.
27 months for Amy's husband Blake Fielder-Civil , 26, husband to blues crooner Amy Winehouse , yesterday was sentenced in a London court to 27 months in jail for assaulting a pub landlord in June 2006 and of obstructing justice by trying to persuade the victim not to give evidence.
Mr. Fielder-Civil later admitted that he beat up James King and then offered him $400,000 to keep quiet about it.
Judge David Radford told Fielder-Civil he had behaved in a "gratuitous, cowardly and disgraceful" way (though he meant that in the best possible sense of the term.) Winehouse, who has appealed for her husband's release at her concerts over the past few months, didn't show up in court yesterday.
A second volume from Tori If, like me, you feel that author extraordinaire Tori Spelling 's awesome memoir, Stori Telling barely scratched the surface of what it's like to be Tori, take heart: The new mommy is writing a follow-up tome. USAToday.com says Mommywood will focus on Tori's accomplishments as a mother.
Word of wisdom from Tori Tori Spelling , whose late father, Aaron Spelling , was the mastermind behind her old show, Beverly Hills 90210 , says she's psyched that badgirl Shannen Doherty has joined the cast of CW's 90210 spin-off show.
"That's probably the best news the fans could ever get," Tori tells People mag.
Hogan: I couldn't run a country Simone de Beauvoir she isn't, but the always-wily post-feminist philosopher Brooke Hogan knows her stuff when it comes to politics. Asked her views on gender and the body politic on her reality show, Brooke Knows Best , Hulk Hogan 's girl was, like: "You know what? I am actually not that much into voting. I think it's kinda crazy that a woman is running because I think that women deal with a lot of emotions and menopause and PMS and stuff." (I guess Brooke is referring to former candidate Hillary Clinton.)
"Like, I'm so moody all the time," Professor Brooke goes on to say, "I know I couldn't be able to run a country, 'cause I'd be crying one day and yelling at people the next day, ya know?"
Swayze: It's a miracle Patrick Swayze , 55, who in March began chemotherapy after announcing he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, is up and about and working hard even as he continues to fight the illness.
"I'm a miracle dude . . . I don't know why," Swayze told the assembled throngs at the L.A. airport Sunday before boarding a plane for Chicago, where he's filming his new TV show for A&E, The Beast .
