Two found dead after blast in Ill. FRANKFORT, Ill. - An explosion destroyed a house early yesterday and the bodies of the elderly couple who occupied the home were found in the wreckage, authorities said. Seven other homes were destroyed. The cause of the explosion was under investigation, said Richard Caragol, a Nicor Inc. natural gas company spokesman. Will County Coroner Patrick O'Neil identified the couple as Clyde and Luella Reils of Frankfort, about 25 miles southwest of Chicago. Luella Reils was 87. O'Neil said Clyde Reils was 89; police gave his age as 88.

Frankfort Mayor Jim Holland said the explosion reduced the couple's home to rubble. Suzy Turnbull, a disaster team coordinator with the American Red Cross of Greater Chicago, said the scene of the blast resembled the destruction sometimes wrought by a tornado. - AP

Feds close down bank in Nevada WASHINGTON - Regulators on Friday shut down Silver State Bank, saying the Nevada bank failed because of losses on soured loans, mainly in commercial real estate and land development. It was the 11th failure this year of a federally insured bank.

Nevada regulators closed Silver State, and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. was appointed receiver of the bank, based in Henderson, Nev. It had $2 billion in assets and $1.7 billion in deposits as of June 30.

Andrew K. McCain, a son of Republican presidential nominee John McCain, sat on the boards of Silver State Bank and of its parent, Silver State Bancorp, starting in February but resigned in July citing "personal reasons," corporate filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission show.

3 held in killing of Texas man, 75 PASADENA, Texas - Two teenagers are accused of stabbing a 75-year-old man to death in a robbery that netted them $15, and police say the mother of one suspect helped put them up to it.

Dannette R. Gillespie, 38, gave knives to her 15-year-old daughter and Vanessa Anne Ocampo, 19, then waited in a car while the teens robbed and killed Eugene Palma, according to a probable-cause warrant. All three were charged with capital murder Friday and were being held without bail.

Palma, a bar owner, was found stabbed several times Wednesday in the driveway of his home in Pasadena, a Houston suburb. He did not know the suspects, police said. According to the warrant, Ocampo told police the three went out looking for someone to rob that morning and followed Palma home from the bar. - AP
